|
This Christmas, the Rotary Clubs of Cork and Bishopstown again join forces on the Remembrance Tree project which they hope will both capture the essence of the Christmas spirit and also provide a simple yat poignant way of remembering deceased loved ones amid the hustle and bustle of the pre-Christmas season. From Saturday 13th December with a blessing by Most Reverend Bishop Buckley and most Reverend Bishop Paul Colton, and attended by the Lord Mayor Brian Bermingham, up to Christmas Eve, in association with Cork City Council, the Rotary Tree of Remembrance will take pride of place among the festive decorations on Cork city's exciting new streetscape. Those wishing to take part will compile a personal message on ribbons which will form a poignant garland. If they wish, they can make a donation of their choice. Funds raised will go to Rotary charities and the special charities this year are Marymount Hospice and the Alzheimers society in the Mercy Hospital. A spokesperson for the Clubs said, "Christmas is a time when thoughts turn to absent friends and loved ones and the good times enjoyed together. The Rotary Remembrance Tree will give people an opportunity to remember those people and times by placing a remembrance ribbon on the tree with a special message attached. We expect that the goodwill and sense of pilgrimage engendered by these gestures will have long-lasting benefits for the bereaved and the Rotary families as a whole." Presidents of Cork and Bishopstown, Tom Woodward and Ger Kilcommons, issued a joint statement confirming their support of the idea of remembrance of loved ones at Christmas time. "We are totally supportive of the project and look forward to the interpersonal benefits that will accrue as a result of this project and the benefits to the year's designated charities. The goodwill generated at the heart of the city should help cement relationships and add a new demension to the Christmas spirit, " they stated.
